Commonwealth Games 2010, the next big event after Beijing Olympics is knocking at the doors of Delhi at just about 2 years time. Apart from the regular questions of infrastructure like roads, Stadiums, transport, security etc. a real cause of worry is the accommodation. Where would the large number of national and international visitors stay in Delhi during the Sporting extravaganza and after?
If reports are to be believed then Bangkok the capital of Thailand has more hotel rooms than Delhi and Bombay put together. This acute dearth of hotel rooms is not really music to the ears as only some 700 days are left for the commonwealth games to begin. There is a shortage of around 40000 rooms in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
It is the budget travelers coming to Delhi who faces the maximum heat of this crunch. Not everybody can shell out exorbitant amounts for staying. In absence of proper hotels, the budget travelers has no alternative but to do with the pigeon-hole hotel rooms in the area opposite the New Delhi Railway Station.
It seems the government has finally woken up and decided do to something for the budget travelers. The Ministry of Tourism said that a subsidy would be offered to private sector builders for constructing budget hotels in one, two and three star categories. In fact there is a plan to provide a 10 year Tax rebate to new budget hotels in Delhi and Delhi National Capital Region.
The Delhi government also plans to start a new category of Budget accommodation in in the form of bed-and-breakfast schemes.
